Canada is one of the preferred destinations for international workers, students and skilled professionals. Every year, IRCC makes updates to its work permit system to balance immigration targets and temporary residency management. As 2026 approaches, many applicants are looking for the Canada Work Permit Rules 2026.
As per recent updates, IEC pools for the 2026 season have officially opened and this allows eligible foreign youth to submit their profiles. IRCC has also confirmed that the temporary residency to PR application will remain valid until 31st December 2026.

IEC Pool for the 2026 Season Reopens
One of the important updates in the Canada work permit system is the opening of the IEC pool for the 2026 season. This change is for those young foreign nationals who want to work in Canada temporarily. International Experience Canada is a youth mobility program that allows citizens of certain partner countries to live and work in Canada for a limited period. This program is based on agreements between Canada and other countries and this only allows young people 18 to 30 or age 18 to 35 years depending on their nationality. IEC is divided into three categories:
- Work Holiday: It’s an open work permit and it does not require a job offer.
- Young Professionals: It is a closed work permit that requires a job offer.
- International Co-op: It is a closed work permit and it’s an internship opportunity in Canada.
Eligible candidates can submit their profile for the upcoming season. Candidates can create an online profile and these profiles are placed into a pool. IRCC conducts periodic draws and selected candidates get an Invitation to apply. Only after getting an ITA, candidates can apply for the actual work permit.
Extension of Open Work Permit Until 31st Dec 2026
Another major update in Canada is the extension of the temporary public policy. It allows open work permits for certain TR to PR applicants. The Temporary public policy is to support individuals who are already in Canada and have applied for PR under eligible pathways. Since PR applications can take time to process, IRCC allows these applicants to apply for an open work permit so that they can continue to work legally while waiting for the PR decision. An open work permit under this policy allows the applicant to work for almost any employer in Canada.
The key update is the extension of this policy until 31st December 2026. This extension confirms that IRCC recognises ongoing processing delays. This extension mainly benefits those workers who are already in Canada on valid temporary status and applicants who have submitted PR applications under eligible programs. This extension is also helpful for those whose current work permits are expiring.
